TTMMBRN-R

TTMMBRN-R. R you?

R for Reborn: the faces of the Pebble years, born again for Pebble Time 2. R for Renew: a year at a time, renewed by you. And R the way it sounds: Are, a question of who you are becoming.

TTMMBRN, 2016, took its type from the adventure of the departure board and its story from a movie agent: a man on the run from his own life, travelling through time in search of his past and his identity. One of the most worn TTMM faces of the Pebble years. Now it opens TTMM-R for Pebble Time 2: those faces, born again for the new Pebble.

LINES

Five lines fill the screen. The time on the second, always solid: the base against which everything else is measured. The lines stand at the right edge or at the left, for the wrist you wear the watch on: the sleeve covers the watch from the elbow side, so on the left wrist the right edge comes out first, on the right wrist the left.

TTMMBRN-R complication glyphs: battery, heart rate, steps, distance, active time, calories, sleep, air quality, temperature

COMPLICATIONS

The other four lines carry what you choose from nineteen: date, day, year, week, countdown to midnight, seconds, weather, temperature, UV, air quality, sunrise and sunset, moon phase, heart rate, steps, distance, active time, sleep, calories, battery. Each has a glyph of its own in a typeface drawn anew for Pebble Time 2; it carries the nerve of our times, where every piece of information can be an alarm, and holds that nerve legibly. A shake shows four more lines for seven seconds.

COLORS

Five styles: White on black, Black on white, Gray on black, Gray on white, and your own colour on black from the Pebble palette; the time stays white or black, always solid. After sunset the face can change by itself: switch on High contrast after sunset and from sunset to sunrise every line turns solid, like the time, so the gray and the colour do not fight the dark. Alarms in color gives each alarm its level, yellow, red, violet, pollens green, motivation blue, on the screen and, at night, in the backlight, which stays lit as long as the screen.

TTMMBRN-R colors: white on black, black on white, gray on black, gray on white, custom color

ALERTS

Listen to the messengers: what they say matters. What matters gets the whole screen: bad air, high UV, heat and cold, dangerous weather, a high heart rate, six pollens, lost Bluetooth, no internet. Three levels each, in their colours, and the bottom line says what to do, from “limit time out” to “stay at home”. Choose the ones you need; the pollens are off until you switch yours on.

TTMMBRN-R alert screens: GOLD HOUR, HIGH GRASS COUNT, HIGH HEART RATE, HIGH HEAT, DUST PM2.5, each with its advice in colour

The screen passes, the line stays: the complication that raised it turns solid and pulses until the value comes back, on its own line or on a borrowed one. In the extreme case four things pulse at once, a control panel of your day, and the time stays untouched. Two things only pulse: the battery below five percent, and the temperature on every day colder or hotter than you set, because how to dress is a daily question.

TTMMBRN-R Alarms in color: MOVE, GOLD HOUR and PM2.5 pulsing in their lines

The hour has a screen too. Clocks struck the hour; this face announces it, inside the hours you set: ten seconds before the full hour, IT IS / 22:00 / A NEW HOUR, so you can welcome it. Time is also the stars. Out of respect for them, and for the act of looking up at all, the golden hour, the full moon and, if you ask for it, the sunrise have screens of their own. Movement and water help the body carry the day: MOVE YOUR BODY after a sedentary hour, DRINK WATER NOW through the day, two small habits kept by the hour.

SOUND & VIBRATION

Every screen arrives the same way: first the sound, then the vibration, then the light, when you are already looking. Three voices, each with its own vibration: one for the hour, the sun, water and move; one for the connection; one for the alarms. The face vibrates alone by default; sound is your choice, at two levels that answer the surroundings: 50% for a room, 84% for the street, where the city is louder and the watch often sits under a sleeve. Quiet Time keeps it silent.

SETTINGS

In the Pebble app, in the order of their weight: purchase first, then what you see, then what you hear, then each screen on or off. Six languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish. The date format sets the region: MM/DD brings °F and the US air scales, DD/MM brings °C and the European ones. 12 or 24 hours the watch decides; in 12-hour time the colon itself tells the half of the day, two wedges on its left before noon, on its right after.

TTMMBRN-R time separators: colon, AM and PM wedges, sunrise and sunset marks

BATTERY & DATA

Every signal costs battery, the sound and the light the most, and a line with seconds wakes the watch every second. The priority, set by the face’s designer and its first tester, is that the alarms and the reminders reach you; the longest battery life comes second. What you do not need, switch off in Settings.

The weather is asked twice an hour and at a shake, so the lines are as fresh as you are mobile. The air quality and the pollens are another matter: Open-Meteo gives a forecast model’s estimate for a cell of about ten kilometres, computed once a day, not a reading from a sensor at your street. A local monitor can disagree with the face, and the face says so here rather than pretend: an air screen is a reason to check, not a verdict.

PRIVACY

Weather and air quality come from Open-Meteo through TTMM’s own weather service. Your phone sends your position rounded to about a kilometre and the Pebble account and watch identifiers that confirm your licence, or your free week, to the weather service; nothing else about you. Health data (heart rate, steps, sleep) never leaves the watch.

GET IT

Update the Pebble app on your phone, open apps.ttmm.is and add the TTMM Stream with one tap. Pebble Time 2 only, with the Pebble app on iPhone or Android. Beside TTMMBRN-R stands TTMMBRN-B: the same type and five lines, without the weather, the alarms or a charge. It is simply free to BE.

TRIAL & PURCHASE

Seven days free, then a one-year licence: $12 plus local taxes through KiezelPay. When the year ends, the face asks you to renew; nothing is charged automatically, no card is kept. The watch shows a five-digit code; you enter it at kzl.io/code and pay by card or PayPal, with no account and no app. Licence terms and privacy: EULA TTMM-R, one agreement for the whole collection.

FAQ

The face

Which complications can a line show?

Nineteen: date, day of the week, year, week number, countdown to midnight, seconds, weather, temperature, UV, air quality, sunrise / sunset, moon phase, heart rate, steps, distance, active time, sleep, calories, battery. Sunrise and sunset share one line: by day it shows the coming sunset (18<45), at night the coming sunrise (6>54). Each of the four lines is set in Settings, under Lines.

What happens after a shake?

A shake shows four more lines of your choice for seven seconds, then the face returns. Set them in Settings, under After shake.

Which line pulses, and when?

The line whose value has left the safe range: heart rate, air quality, UV, temperature, dangerous weather, battery below five percent, lost Bluetooth, no internet. It turns solid and pulses until the value comes back. An alarm without a line of its own borrows one. MOVE, DRINK and GOLD pulse in a line at their hour. While the watch keeps Quiet Time, the last line says QUIET. A switch in Screens (Dangerous heart rate, Unhealthy pollen levels and the others) turns the whole alarm off, the screen and the pulsing line together; Alarm indicators turns the pulsing off on its own.

Where are AM and PM?

In the colon. In 12-hour time two wedges stand on its left before noon and on its right after noon; no letters. The seconds can pulse in the colon too (Pulsing seconds in Settings), as they did in 2016.

Can the lines stand on the left?

Yes: Text alignment in Settings, the right edge or the left. A sleeve covers the watch from the elbow side, so on the left wrist the right edge shows first (the 2016 default) and on the right wrist the left; put the text at the edge that peeks out.

What is the countdown line?

One line counts the seconds left in the day, from 86,400 at midnight down to none. A daily memento mori on the wrist, and an evening test: did you run and not make it, or did you value the day and bid it farewell in peace. The tool of today’s agent, who lives the day in every second. Does anyone use it?

What changes after sunset?

Day and night are astronomical, sunrise to sunset, by the watch’s own clock. Switch on High contrast after sunset and the gray and colour styles get a night face of their own. A pulsing line still brings what is important.

Which temperature is it, the air’s or the felt one?

The felt one: wind and humidity included, as the body meets it. The line, the pulse and the heat and cold screens all read it, because how to dress is the question they answer.

Which languages does it speak?

English, French, German, Spanish, Italian or Polish: the days, the lines, every screen and the PAYMENT screens. The typeface carries their accents. Choose the language in Settings, under Main.

Why does the type look like a departure board?

Because it comes from one: in 2016 TTMMBRN took its type from the adventure of the departure board. For Pebble Time 2 it was drawn anew and given new glyphs, one for each complication. It carries the nerve of our times, where every piece of information can be an alarm, and holds that nerve legibly. High legibility hides the mystery of our becoming R.

Screens and the rhythm of the hour

Does the face sound or vibrate on the hour at night?

Only inside the hours you set, 8:00 to 22:00 by default. Quiet Time on the watch holds it back too.

The screens come without a sound. Why?

Sound is your choice. In the face’s Settings, under Vibration and sound, Vibration alone is the default; choose 50% or 84%. The watch keeps the sound silent in Quiet Time and when its speaker is muted. Bluetooth coming back and low battery have no sound on purpose. If no app on the watch plays a sound, restart the watch.

Why did the sunset screen come earlier than the sunset?

It is the golden hour screen: the sun six degrees above the horizon, forty minutes or so before the sunset in Warsaw in September, longer in June, shorter near the equator.

Why does MOVE sometimes not appear at five to the hour?

Because you moved. MOVE appears only after a sedentary hour: fewer than 250 steps since the full hour.

When do the weather and air screens come?

Once an hour, just after the face has fresh numbers: it asks two minutes past the hour, and the verdicts follow from four past, one a minute: temperature, weather, UV, the air, the pollens. The air speaks once: the worst pollutant with its own advice, or the index when no single pollutant is over its band. Between screens the line on the face pulses the whole time; the screen is the reminder, not the only signal.

Which pollens does it know?

Grass, birch, alder, olive, ragweed and mugwort: the six Open-Meteo reports for Europe. Outside Europe the source has no pollen data, so the pollen lines and screens stay quiet there. Pollen screens are off by default; switch on the ones that concern you.

How good is the air quality data?

Open-Meteo takes it from the Copernicus CAMS forecast: a model computed once a day for cells of about eleven kilometres, with hourly values for the coming days. It is good at what moves over a region, Saharan dust, wildfire smoke, ozone, and blind to what happens on one street, like a winter evening of coal stoves. A local sensor is right about your street; the model is right about the region. Treat an air screen as a reason to check, not a verdict. The pollens come from the same model, Europe only.

Which pollutants does it watch?

The air-quality index and six pollutants: PM 2.5, PM 10, CO, NO2, O3, NH3. Three levels each, in their colours, with a recommendation that grows with the level; for the gases, where a mask is no help, from “go easy” to “stay home”. The scales follow your region: the European index with DD/MM, the US index and the EPA thresholds with MM/DD.

When do the heat and cold screens come?

When they are news: the first time in a week a line is crossed, at frost, −10, −20, 30, 35 or 40. The temperature line pulses on every day colder or hotter than you set (Cold from and Heat from in Settings), because how to dress is a daily question.

Sunrise, golden hour, full moon: when do their screens come?

The sunrise at the sunrise, off by default; on holiday, when the view is worth it, turn it on. The golden hour when the sun stands six degrees above the horizon, before the sunset. The full moon once, on its evening, after dusk. All three under Sun and Moon in Settings, with the hours of the chime under Hour.

When does DRINK WATER NOW come?

Through the day, from 9 to 18: at ten to the hour, every second hour.

Why the sound first, then the vibration, then the light?

The order of the senses: ear, body, eye. Every screen arrives the same way: first the sound, then the vibration, then the light, when you are already looking. Three voices, each with its own vibration: one for the hour, the sun, water and move; one for the connection; one for the alarms.

Settings and battery

What is in Settings?

At the top, Purchase Now: it ends the free week and brings the code screen, which stays until you pay. Main: Text alignment (right or left), language, date DD/MM or MM/DD, week ISO or US, leading zero, pulsing seconds, five styles (White on black, Black on white, Gray on black, Gray on white, Custom color on black), High contrast after sunset, Vibration and sound, Alarms in color. Lines: four main lines, Show Quiet Time. After shake: on or off, four lines. Alarm indicators: on or off, Cold from, Heat from. Connection alerts: Bluetooth lost, Offline. Hour, Sun, Moon: their screens and the hours of the chime. Screens: each family on or off, each pollen on or off. Motivation: move, drink.

Which region am I in: °C or °F, the European or the US scales?

The date format is the region. MM/DD brings °F, the US air-quality index and the EPA thresholds for the pollutants; DD/MM brings °C, the European index and the European scales. The choice is yours, not the GPS’s: on a trip you keep your own scale.

What does Quiet Time do to the face?

In the watch’s Quiet Time the face holds back its screens with their sound, vibration and light; a line out of range still pulses. With Show Quiet Time on, the last line says QUIET.

What costs battery?

Every signal costs battery: the sound and the light the most, and a line with seconds (Seconds, Countdown, Pulsing seconds) wakes the watch every second. The priority, set by the face’s designer and first tester, is that the alarms and the reminders reach you; the longest battery life comes second. What you do not need, switch off in Settings.

Licence and purchase

Why does the face cost a yearly fee?

Because I want to know whether this face still matters to you a year on, and your answer is the only measure I have. Nothing renews by itself and no card is kept: after the year the face asks once more, and you decide. I could have charged once and carried the weather server myself; I chose the year because a face worn for years is a relationship, not a download.

The year keeps the weather service alive: weather, air quality, UV, pollens and sun times, refreshed twice an hour. Nothing else is asked of you: no account, no key to paste, no card kept, no ads, no data sold; your position leaves the phone rounded to about a kilometre. It is not a subscription: when the year ends you decide again, and nothing is charged by itself. Twelve dollars a year, plus local taxes.

Is there a free version of TTMMBRN-R?

Yes: TTMMBRN-B. The same type and the same five lines, without the weather, the alarms and the sound. Free for good, with no trial, no licence and no account, in the TTMM Stream at apps.ttmm.is.

Other watchfaces show the weather for free. Why does this one cost?

Because TTMM chooses the paid feed, for its quality, its reliability and its room for every wrist that wears the face, bought from Open-Meteo on a commercial plan and answered for by TTMM. The seven free days, a full week and not an hour, are there to check whether a weather service grown to air quality and pollens is something you want on your wrist. If you understand and value that, the face is yours, a year at a time; if not, look for alternatives.

What happens after the trial, or after the year, if I don’t renew?

The face shows the PAYMENT PROCESS screen with your code and keeps it there until you pay. That is the one decision the face asks of you: renew, or choose another face. Nothing is charged by itself, and the face waits: whenever you come back, a code is on screen.

What do the PAYMENT screens mean?

The licence check runs through KiezelPay; the screens are the face’s own: full screen, in its type, each headed with what it is about, so you know which step you are at. Read them in the order of the process.

YOUR TRIAL · 7 DAYS · HAS STARTED: the free week has begun, right after the first install; nothing to do.

PAYMENT PROCESS · 12345 · ENTER AT KZL.IO/CODE: the code screen: it comes when the free week is over, or the moment you tap Purchase Now at the top of the face’s Settings (that ends the free week). Open kzl.io/code on your phone or computer, type the five digits and pay $12 plus local taxes for one year. The screen stays until the payment is through: a watchface has no buttons, so there is nothing to dismiss it with. If you decide not to pay, choose another face; TTMMBRN-R waits, with a code on screen whenever you come back.

PAYMENT PROCESS · 12345 · FINISH ON KZL.IO/CODE: the watch knows the code has been entered and the payment is under way; finish it on that page.

PAYMENT · DONE · THANK YOU: the licence is on for a year; the weather lines return within a minute or two, a wrist shake asks sooner.

PAYMENT VERIFICATION · NO BT · CONNECT YOUR PHONE: KiezelPay could not reach the phone; reconnect, and the face asks again by itself.

PAYMENT VERIFICATION · NONET · CONNECT TO INTERNET: the phone is connected but has no internet; the same, once it does.

PAYMENT VERIFICATION · ERROR · TRY AGAIN LATER: something between the watch and KiezelPay failed; the code screen comes back, and the face tries again by itself.

After the year the code screen comes back by itself: the same steps, a fresh year.

When something does not work

Does it work without the phone?

Time, date, steps, heart rate and every indicator that lives on the watch: yes. Weather and air quality need the phone and the internet; the last reading stays on the face, and OFFLINE tells you when it can’t refresh.

New phone or a reinstalled face: do I pay again?

No. When the watch shows the code, take it to kzl.io/code and choose Already Purchased: KiezelPay asks for the email you bought with and unlocks the face at once.

The TTMM Stream is gone from the Pebble app. Why?

The list of sources lives in the Pebble app on your phone. After a new phone or a reinstall of the Pebble app, open apps.ttmm.is and add the TTMM Stream again with one tap. If the stream is listed but its section is empty, close the Pebble app completely and open it again.

The phone is online, yet the face (or the PAYMENT VERIFICATION screen) says NONET. Why?

Being online is not the same as reaching the three addresses the face needs: api.ttmm.is for the weather, kiezelpay.com and k-pay.io for the licence. Some home routers, “security” or parental filters, DNS blockers, office Wi-Fi and some VPNs block one of them without saying so. The quickest check: switch the phone to mobile data for a minute. If the weather arrives and the PAYMENT VERIFICATION screen gives way to the code, the network you were on is filtering. Then allow those addresses in that network, or wear the face on a network that lets them through. The watch cannot tell a filtered network from no network at all; it only knows that no answer came.

The weather lines show only a question mark. Why?

The face asks the phone where you are before it asks for the weather, so the Pebble app needs permission to use your location; on Android “Allow all the time”, because the face asks in the background. Reinstalling the Pebble app resets that permission; grant it again in the app’s settings and the weather returns within five minutes. The other reasons are simpler: no internet on the phone, or a licence that has run out.
